Mentorship Deep Dive (Session 2, Part 2: Case Studies of Mentorship Stances in Action) 2024-2025

In the second part of the Mentorship Deep Dive session 2, Dr. Kirstin Northenscold presents a mentorship framework for teacher residency programs, using the case study of "Veronica," a resident teacher to illustrate how mentors often overlook residents’ strengths by focusing on perceived deficits. It is argued that effective mentorship requires disrupting traditional power hierarchies and intentionally designing learning experiences through co-teaching, co-planning, and recognizing residents as legitimate teachers from the start. The session offers practical strategies, tools, and examples showing how asset-based, participatory mentoring helps resident teachers build identity, confidence, and long-term success in the classroom.
