The Residency Lab
Mentorship Deep Dive (Session 4, Part 1: Sustaining Mentorship) 2024-2025
On April 28, 2025, the Lab held the last session of the Mentorship Focused Deep Dive series. Dr. Edward Gonzalez, from Kern County Superintendent of Schools, begins the session by presenting on sustaining mentorship in teacher residency programs, with a focus on equity-driven, asset-based practices. Through vignettes, classroom videos, and UDL-aligned strategies, he demonstrates how mentors can help residents make effective instructional moves, including routines, engagement, and classroom management, explicit and transferable across contexts. The session also addresses real-world constraints such as burnout and time pressures, offering program-level strategies for streamlining requirements, and creating meaningful observation and coaching opportunities that support both mentors and residents.
